This module provides a solid understanding of the concepts of accounting and financial management for non-financial managers. Students will develop technical, analytical and critical skills in advanced finance topics.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to:  

  • appreciate the use of accounting numbers in managing an organisation’s (public/private/third sector) performance (financial statement analysis).  
  • read and understand financial reports and company accounts. 
  • comprehend the fundamental ideas and concepts of finance.  
  • understand an organisation’s financial decisions relating to stock valuation, project appraisals, estimation of required return and capital structure. 
  • understand the usefulness and limitations of accounting in aiding financial management decisions. 
  • critically appraise key issues in accounting and finance raised in the media.

  • Unseen end of term online examination (75%)
