Advanced management accounting

This module provides insights into advanced aspects of planning, decision-making, performance evaluation and control.

The module considers a range of strategic management accounting techniques and critically examines the impact of behavioural and social issues in the use and implementation of management accounting techniques. This module will help to encourage critical, analytical thinking concerning the interplay between accounting and management.

Learning outcomes

If you complete the course successfully, you should be able to:

  • Explain and discuss a range of advanced costing methods
  • Identify and critique a range of investment appraisal techniques, select as appropriate and apply within the investment appraisal process, and make a justifiable recommendation
  • Explain the nature and significance of risk and uncertainty, and devise strategies for dealing with risk and uncertainty in decision-making
  • Understand the nature of standard costing and demonstrate the necessary skills to calculate advanced variances
  • Understand and critique both the theoretical issues and influences on practical decisions associated with multi-product break-even analysis
  • Identify and evaluate the key factors that influence transfer pricing

Assessment

This module is assessed by:

  • Coursework (30% weighting):
  • There is one item of coursework for this module which contributes to the final assessment mark forthis module:
  • Coursework: a written essay of a maximum of 2,000 or 2,500 words (deadline – weeks 9-12) The coursework is designed to check student progress, extend and reinforce concepts covered and also test individual performance.
  • Examination (70% weighting):
  • The final piece of assessment will be an unseen written examination of 2 hours’ duration.

Farhad Madon

Farhad Madon is a CIMA qualified accountant with specialist experience in spreadsheet and database design, consultancy and training. He has lectured in a wide range of accounting modules at various universities and is involved in the ACCA BSc Project. He also prepares students for the examinations of professional accountancy bodies.

Farhad has spent a number of years working overseas in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Denmark, France and Holland and gained a great deal of experience in international accounting. His interests lie in developing business and accounting systems and he has written numerous systems involved with business planning, modelling and budgeting, marketing, order-processing and invoicing, stock control and personnel management.
