Since 2006, I have been reading with great interest the reports that World Economic Forum (WEF) has produced regarding the Global Gender Gap.
Each year, using a robust methodology, this report ranks 144 countries based on four areas. One of these – unsurprisingly – is education.
The reports clearly demonstrate that women across the world are on average earning far less than men.
There are different reasons for this, several of which are cultural. But the fact of the matter is that there are not enough women in senior leadership positions.
In the UK’s largest organisations, men occupy over six in ten of the top positions. This contributes towards an overall mean pay gap of 15%.
It’s a depressing thought that the gender gap might take over 200 years to close.
What can we do?
We’ve asked ourselves: as an MBA programme, what could we do within our power to make a serious contribution towards the closure of this unfair gap?
The answer is to support the training and development of women towards leadership positions. We could support this by offering 150 scholarships for women anywhere in the world to develop their acumen and gain a world-class degree.
The University of London has a long and amazing history in education, and an impressive record for advancing the education of women in the UK and elsewhere.
150 years ago, the University of London introduced ‘Special Examinations for Women’, becoming the first institution in the UK to enable access to higher education for women.
This presented a golden opportunity to introduce 150 scholarships for women all over the world.
The Chartered Management Institute (CMI), an accreditation partner for our MBA, says that supporting women into senior roles will boost global productivity and inclusiveness.
We believe that too – so these awards are not just about individuals, but also about changing the working culture and the demographics of global business leadership.
These awards are available on a first-awarded, first-served basis until the January 2019 intake. We hope you will consider applying and joining our flexible online MBA.
