What Are the Best London Food Markets?

Each London food market is a celebration of cultures from all over the world. From aromatic curries and cheesy delights to flaky pastries and strong coffee, you’re sure to find the right dish to satisfy your appetite. Here’s our top five London street food markets.

Sign at Borough Market London

Borough Market, London

Borough Market is one of London’s many historic food markets. Trading on its current site since 1756, Borough Market London is the go-to place for artisan bread, cheese, velvety wine and more.

There are designated dining areas and restaurants as well as stalls. Fan favourites include Kappacasein, where you’ll find oozing cheese melted on potatoes, and their famed gooey cheese toasties. Alternatively, try a hot hog roast at Hobb’s Roast, a stall that many queue up for.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the best time to visit Borough Market is between 10am-12pm Wednesday-Friday, and 8am-12pm on Saturday. While Saturdays are more lively than the rest of the week, it can also get super crowded, so best to plan ahead if you feel uncomfortable.

The day doesn’t stop at Borough Market, either. The market is conveniently located near major tourist attractions, including the Tower of London. Explore the histories of London inside the castle or walk along the Glass Floors of the Tower Bridge and take in the sights of the capital city.

Borough Market is open seven days a week. See their hours here

Fruit and veg market stall

Berwick Street Market, London

Walk along to the end of Berwick Street in Soho and you’ll find a cluster of stalls selling an array of delectable food and drink. Dating back to 1778, Berwick Street Market is one of the oldest London food markets. The market includes 20 food stalls featuring the likes of What Jerk!, Wow Shees and Paella Fellas, plus fabric and florist merchants mingled in between. You can also head to Berwick Street Market Soho to purchase goods such as fresh milk, artisan cheeses, seasonal fruit and veg, bread and cakes, and more.

The market first emerged as French, Greeks and Italians began to populate Soho, opening restaurants and eating houses. In fact, tomatoes were first introduced to London here in 1880!

Now, this melting pot of cuisines offers a wide selection of foods from around the world. From Egyptian and Jamaican to Spanish and Greek, you’ll be sure to find something new amongst the bustling stalls.

Berwick Street Market opening times are 8am-6pm Monday to Saturday. If you want to escape the large crowds, then we recommend going before or after lunch time.

Chicken wings

Broadway Market, London

Broadway Market is considered to be one of London’s trendiest markets, boasting a fantastic selection of local produce, vintage clothing and mouth-watering food stalls. This Victorian street food market is located in Hackney and has been selling seasonal fruit and veg since the 1800’s.

Now it’s a foodie heaven with over 100 stalls, featuring oozing toasties from Deeney’s and spicy chicken wings from Lord of the Wings. You can find culinary delights from all over the world, including Persian, Asian, African and Indonesian. Amongst the colours and smells of these exciting dishes, there are also stalls selling seasonal fruit and veg, cheeses, freshly-baked bread and cakes, as well as florists and homeware.

When London’s Broadway Market isn’t open, there is still plenty to explore. It’s a community hub where people go to meet up over a hearty meal in one of the many restaurants and bars, visit an independent retailer or to simply do their weekly shop.

To get to Broadway Market London, the nearest tube is Bethnal Green, only a 15 minute walk away. While you’re there, why don’t you take some time to explore the area? Near the market you’ll find Hackney City Farm, London Fields Lido and Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities. The latter is ideal for anyone interested in dark, mysterious and unusual objects, with a cocktail bar to top off the day.

Broadway Market is open Monday - Saturday, 9am-5pm.

We can’t make a list of the best London food markets without including Camden Market. Camden is London’s largest market. Camden Street Market offers a variety of cuisines, including Indian, Portuguese, Hawaiian, Italian and Asian.

Some of the best Camden Market stalls include Oli Baba’s, The Cheese Wheel, Hans and Gretal and SteakHAUS. Once you’ve taken a stroll to one of these stalls, it’s not hard to see why they’re popular.
