Enhancing employability

This summer, the University of London collaborated with globally respected and high value Placement Providers in Pakistan and Vietnam.

The Placement Providers offered students studying Undergraduate Laws and Economics, Management, Finance and the Social Sciences (EMFSS) the opportunity to gain exclusive, career enhancing experience within corporate working environments.

We are pleased to say that 41 Business Placements took place and were successfully concluded in a range of industries including law, technology, security, aviation, finance and consumable goods.

Joanne Harris, Associate Director of Student Experience said:

We are incredibly proud that two of our students have been offered permanent roles upon completion of their University of London degree - a testament to the value of our Business Placements in enhancing employability. I have no doubt that our students will continue to impress with their professional conduct, integrating all they have learned from the process into their academic, personal and career development. We recognise the importance of experiential, work-based learning in providing graduates with the best future career outcomes and very much look forward to expanding our offering to enhance the employability of our students.

About the Business Placements

The Business Placements scheme sources work-based learning opportunities for University of London students within innovative, successful and respected organisations, where students are offered the chance to improve their skills and knowledge under the guidance of industry professionals.

Distinctive in delivering exploratory and affirming Business Placement experiences, this scheme enables students to apply their academic learning in a practical environment. Not only does this broaden skills and knowledge but it also helps students to clarify their career motivations, therefore bringing better-prepared graduates to the labour market.

Following the success of the first Business Placements that took place in Pakistan in 2017, this year we developed new relationships, not only within Pakistan but also in Vietnam, expanding our offering to more students in the ASEAN region.

Joanne Harris, Associate Director: Student Experience describes the programme as “a valuable extension of the learning experience of our students that will assist them in the challenge of finding and securing a job. The application process is competitive but also set up to be a learning process where individualised feedback and advice is offered to students who are not selected. Successful students, who excelled in their written applications and interviews, went on to complete Business Placements that varied from two weeks to three months long, where they received both challenging and important tasks as well as networking opportunities.”

Simon Askey, Director of Undergraduate Laws said:

I am highly encouraged to learn our students have had another successful year gaining experience within leading law firms and legal departments of global organisations.

Joining a legal team as a student can be daunting and it is pleasing that all of the students reported they adapted well, and grew in confidence through the communication, teamwork and perseverance they have honed through their studies with Undergraduate Laws.

Their involvement in researching and presenting cases will have provided extremely valuable exposure to the hectic day-to-day environment of a thriving legal team, and a brilliant opportunity to further develop key skills.

Elizabeth Aitken, Director: Summer School, International & Executive Programmes at the London School of Economics, remarks:

The excellent performance and conduct shown by EMFSS students during their Business Placements this year demonstrates their ambition to thrive in the world of work. Placements ranging from finance and corporate sales through to human resources and advisory roles have enabled students to enhance their self-esteem, improve their knowledge and skills within their field and had a positive effect on their studies. This scheme has provided insight and experience into the many career possibilities of an EMFSS degree and we hope to see these opportunities offered to a wide range of students all over the world.
