The University of London is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Ghazwa Alwani-Starr to the position of Director of Property and Facilities Management (P&FM) with effect from 1 December 2016.
Dr Alwani-Starr has extensive experience in the construction and property industry with previous roles in the Wandsworth Primary Care Trust, The Prince’s Foundation and the British Airports Authority. She gained her PhD from the University of Leeds and had several years’ experience as a chartered civil and structural engineer. Most recently Dr Alwani-Starr was Director of Estates and Campus Services at the University of Roehampton where she led a £100m programme for the development of a new University library and two new halls of residence along with responsibility for the strategic estate planning and facilities management services.
In this new role, Ghazwa will continue the excellent work of the department including maximising the academic opportunities of the University’s considerable estate as well as diversifying the income base. Implementing the Estate Masterplan in consultation with the member institutions of the University and other key stakeholders will be an immediate priority while meeting stretching carbon reduction targets will also be critical. Ghazwa will also oversee the operation of over 2,900 student rooms in intercollegiate halls including the new £140m Gardens Halls project in Bloomsbury.
In announcing the appointment, Chris Cobb, Pro Vice-Chancellor Operations and Chief Operating Officer said, “I very much look forward to Ghaz joining the University. She brings a great deal of experience that will serve the University well, and will oversee considerable current and future developments in our extensive property portfolio as well as our Facilities Management contracts.”
On her appointment, Ghazwa said “I am very excited to have this opportunity to join such a great institution. I look forward to working with my future colleagues to contribute to the development of the University and help deliver its continued success.”
The current Director of P&FM, Paul Wilkinson, leaves at the end of September to take up a new role as Corporation of London's City Surveyor.
