Social distancing and infection prevention measures have led to the suspension of the SCONUL Access Scheme which means that SCONUL members of Senate House Library will not be able to borrow items during this period. SCONUL members will need to return Senate House Library items currently on loan to the Library via the returns dropboxes at Senate House as soon as possible.
Current academic staff (excluding retired and emeritus staff) and postgraduate research students (for example, PhD and MPhil) at UK universities are entitled to free annual reference membership through the SCONUL scheme.
SCONUL members based in the UK will still have reference-only access to Senate House Library while the SCONUL Scheme remains suspended. However, while our reading rooms remain closed, access to the hundreds of e-resources and databases is only available online remotely at present. Senate House Library is working hard to test various options that meet health and safety criteria with a view to re-opening limited, bookable study spaces and access to some collections for readers in need of onsite access in the very near future.
SCONUL's decision has not been taken lightly and Senate House Library is aware that this will impact many researchers' work. We will look to reinstate loans as soon as the scheme resumes. In the meantime, we have introduced offers for SCONUL members on SHL individual membership options that will allow SCONUL members to continue to borrow books through the Autumn term. Please contact our Membership Team via email firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
